Apartment Fire Leaves Many Homeless

MONROE – October 3, 2010 at 1:50 am: Monroe Fire District #3 and Monroe Police department responded to an apartment fire in the 100 block of Hill Street in Monroe. A column of smoke could be seen as units approached the scene and upon arrival flames were visible from two floors. The apartment building had approximately 16 units and it is believed that approximately 35 occupants escaped the building and assembled at the nearby Eagles Hall. The Red Cross responded for assistance and has set up a temporary shelter for the victims of this fire. There were no reports of injuries.

The apartment building that was a total loss is estimated at $450,000. The cause of the fire that appeared to start in a ground floor apartment is under investigation. Hill Street will be closed from Lewis Street to Blakely Street during this investigation and Monroe police officers will remain on scene to secure the building for safety reasons. There was no damage to surrounding buildings.

Citizen’s Call Comes in Time

MONROE – June 29, 2010 at 7:20 pm: Monroe Police Officers responded to a citizen’s call of strange noises coming from an apartment in the 300 block of Kelsey St. Within four minutes, officers arrived at the scene and heard the sound of a smoke alarm coming from an apartment. Upon entering the smoke filled apartment the officers found a semi-conscious elderly male on the floor. The officers were able to carry the male out of the apartment into fresh air.  The source of the smoke came from food that was burning on the stove.

Monroe Fire District #3 responded and transported the 84-year-old male to Valley General Hospital for treatment.

The combination of a concerned citizen’s call and a quick response resulted in a life saved.
